The Pastry Box
Business of the Month: The Pastry Box
Israel’s Most Talked-About Bakery is a Japanese Love Story
Have you ever tried yuzu croissants? What about a pastry in the shape of a little puppy? You can find all this and more at the Pastry Box by Nurit Chitayat, one of the most creative bakeries to open in Tel Aviv in the past decade.
The Pastry Box is best described as a love letter between pastry chef Nurit Chitayat and Japan, her childhood home until the age of 14. For many years, she went back and forth between Japan and Tel Aviv, working as a teacher for 25 years in Israel. However, just as true love never really dies, her love for Japanese aesthetics and delicate pastries is now her muse, and this bakery has become one of the most creative spots in Tel Aviv.
The spacious pastry shop is in the unassuming locale of south Tel Aviv. Inside, you’ll discover a delicious playground that has attracted pastry lovers who visit from far and wide. The look is reminiscent of an haute couture store, but dig a little deeper, and you will discover several vitrines that reveal pastry concepts, some more fancy, some more fun, a true melange of styles that somehow combine together magically.
One vitrine is an homage to a zoo with puppy loaves of bread, leopard print cookies, leopard print loaves, and porcupine bread rolls with olives for eyes, among other delights. For more bougie tastebuds, another vitrine reveals chocolate rocks filled with ice cream alongside sake and classy renditions of cake pops. Also available are sandwiches, artisan breads, unicorn-filled horns, yuzu-laced croissants, stunning eclairs, and lightly glazed “baked” donuts that don’t taste anything like the sweet donuts that can be found in donut shops.
The concept is simple: you can choose your own box size and, according to what you want, mix and match from the available selection. The box is essentially a tasting menu of contrasting concepts and a playground for your tastebuds.
You can also opt to select a style and get a carefully curated box of your dreams. Pastry box is kosher with a Teudat Tzohar.
