From Trash to Treasure: Anina Recycles Ugly Vegetables and Turns Them into A Pod Of Culinary Wealth

One of the biggest challenges in the food world is the amount of waste. So much is based on appearance that every day, less than visually perfect produce otherwise good to eat is set aside.

Straight from Israel’s food tech infrastructure to solve this problem is Anina, a company that uses patented technology to take the e-food-grade lamination process to the pod structure. This unique technology forms flexible sheets from fresh vegetables.

“We produce these vegetable sheets with minimal processing, preserving the original vegetable's flavors, aromas, colors, and textures,” says Mor Wilk, VP of R&D for Anina.

“The heart of our technology is the creation of the vegetable sheets. The flexibility of these sheets enables us to form any 3D structure and create any recipe in a decorative pod, each set to its unique controlled cooking time.”

How it all Started

Two students, Esti Brantz and Meydan Levy, were concerned by the huge amounts of produce that go to waste because they don’t live up to the beauty standards of food lovers. Determined to solve this issue, they opted to find a way to bring veggies lacking in lust to life! It took them two years of hanging out at farmer's markets and testing alternatives and techniques until they found this incredible solution.

The duo purchases unwanted produce and creates healthy meals that heat up in minutes. On the menu, Pasta Primavera is composed of vegetables, Italian herbs, and pasta. The Mediterranean bowl is a delight of vegetables, bulgur wheat, and black lentils, while the Vietnamese bowl is a delicious mix of rice noodles and vegetables.
