Light in the Darkness: Updates from GCI

This truly is an intense time, filled with both overwhelming challenges and profound moments of light. As we transition through the High Holidays, I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of this period and share some personal news as well as updates from the Galilee Culinary Institute (GCI).

First, I am thrilled to announce the birth of our baby girl, Shira Or, whose name holds deep meaning—Shira means "song" and Or means "light." She was born on the 25th of Elul, the day the world was created, and her arrival amidst sirens and the tense atmosphere of a hospital bomb shelter felt like the universe’s way of reminding us that, even in darkness, there is light. Both Mommy and Baby are doing great, and we are so grateful for this new source of joy and hope during a time when the world often feels so heavy. This is the spirit we need today—light, joy, and hope to guide us through these difficult times.

On the GCI front, despite the intensity of the war in the north, we continue to push forward with our plans. We’re gearing up for the convention in Texas and look forward to connecting with many of you there. Sponsorship opportunities have been finalized, and while things are understandably moving a bit slower due to the conflict, both Building A and the dorms are nearing completion.

Our curriculum is coming together beautifully, and we’ve made great strides with our partners at Tel Hai and Migal. Despite the challenges, we are doing everything we can to keep moving forward and preparing for what’s next.

As we reflect on the past year, we know how dark it’s been for many of us, particularly with the one-year commemoration of the October 7th atrocities. But with the birth of Shira Or and the work we’re doing at GCI, we are reminded that even in the darkest of times, light and hope are always possible. We continue to pray for peace, for the end of this war, and for the safe return of our hostages.

Wishing everyone a holiday season filled with light, hope, and the promise of a brighter future. Let’s look forward to peace, prosperity, and the chance to build a better tomorrow.

L’chaim!
